The Challenge

Today’s linear system of «take – make – waste» needs to change. Natural resources are limited, and the current system has huge negative impacts on our planet.

Besides the ecological lack of sustainability, the linear system contains untapped potential around customer loyalty and economical sustainability.

How to face the challenge? We think it is to be done one step at a time and this with conviction and commitment.

The huge number of textiles that are already in circulation today must be kept in reuse for as long as possible. These textiles already in circulation are mostly not designed for recycling. Therefore, we should ensure to keep these textiles in reuse. This leads to the next question of how keeping used textiles and shoes in the circle. First and foremost, there must be collection infrastructure in place, which allows the population to discard their unwanted used textiles and shoes in a convenient and responsible way. Fashion retailers and brands can support the establishment and expansion of such an infrastructure through implementing take back systems.

Besides the used textiles and shoes in circulation, there are huge amounts of pre-consumer textiles and shoes in stock as well as like new products from customer returns. TEXAID provides also concepts and solutions to keep these products in the loop through resale or recycling.

Resale & Recycling

TEXAID provides different possibilities to keep the textile items and shoes in reuse. Depending on fashion retailer or brand requirements, items can be resold through TEXAIDs own B2C retail channels and/or through B2B wholesale channels. Furthermore, TEXAID provides the possibility to run a ReCommerce platform from A to Z as a service in the look and feel of the fashion retailers or brands corporate identity and design. This enables a convenient and fast entry into ReCommerce and new market opportunities.

For items not fitting to be put on the secondhand market, TEXAID provides different recycling solutions. From scaled downcycling processes to innovative textile to textile recycling projects, TEXAID has a vast network of different mechanical and chemical recycling specialists to realize customer-specific concepts.

Manage Unsold & Returned Merchandise

Products should be kept in the circle at its highest value for as long as possible, especially when the products are new or like new. TEXAID enables you to define and implement the best fitting concepts for your brand or company to keep unsold & returned merchandise in the circle.

For ecological and economic reasons, overstock, leftover, end-of-season, customer returns as well as slightly damaged items should be kept in reuse. TEXAID provides resale possibilities through B2C as well as B2B channels.

If resale is not applicable for reasons like licence issues, brand protection or other requirements from fashion retailers or brands side, the textile material should be kept in the circle through recycling.

Technology Assessment - Redefining Textile Waste Sorting: Impulses and findings for the future of next-gen sorting facilities
Textiles play a fundamental role in our society, providing us with essential commodities such as clothing, footwear and home textiles. Once textiles are in use, they become unwearable or unusable after some time, leading to the generation of high amounts of textile waste in the world, which at some point end up in landfills or incinerators. Therefore, it is essential to collect and sort textile waste according to the waste hierarchy to allow for the best utilization to circumvent environmental pollution and conserve and reuse resources.
