Transform Textile Waste into Feedstock
Textile waste is a problem in Europe. Out of 7-7.5 million tonnes of textiles discarded every year, only 30-35 % are collected separately – and of that quantity, only 15-20 % are sorted by medium and larger sorting facilities within the EU. After sorting, 60 % still qualify as wearable clothes, however after a second or third collection-loop, all of the textiles become non-wearable sooner or later. Therefore, fibre-to-fibre recycling is becoming increasingly important to preserve the valuable resources.

TEXAID introduced the first recycled tote bag with a digital product passport
“With this bag, we wanted to show that it is possible to create fantastic products from post-consumer textile waste. At TEXAID, we want to bring a high-quality feedstock and finally a recycled fiber into the circular textile value chain to create new products that are not only made from other waste streams, but also from used textiles. With this bag, we took a first bold step and were able to create a capsule product for our own Vintage Revivals second-hand stores. We will sell these bags in our second-hand stores throughout Germany.” Thomas Böschen, Managing Director of Texaid, ReSales, and Vintage Revivals.

TEXCIRLCE
After two years of joint collaboration and research the Swiss Textile Recycling Project “Texcircle” comes to an end. Together with all partners and stakeholders, we have worked on the vision of a textile cluster where materials flow in circular loops. The goal of the project was to develop high-quality yarns and products incorporating such a large amount of recycled textiles as possible - and we succeeded! In the end, several product prototypes from carpets, socks, and curtains to pullovers, padding and accessories have been developed with at least 50 % recycled fiber up to 80 % recycled fibers and yarns.

SORTING FOR CIRULARITY
The sorting for circularity project lead by Fashion for good and Circle Economy has come to an end and releases a report detailing the findings of the 16-month analysis. The analysis indicates that 74%, a total of 494,000 tonnes, of low-value, post-consumer textiles is readily available for fibre-to-fibre recycling in six European countries. This represents the potential to generate an additional €74 million per year in value by reintroducing sorted and recycled textiles back into the value chain.
